Barista
Question: What is a barista?
Answer:
The easy answer is that a barista is quite simply someone who prepares gourmet coffee drinks. Normally these would be Italian espresso based drinks such as the usuals you get at coffee shops like Starbucks.
Baristas often range in skill level and as a result their responsibility level ranges too, this means that there is always more to being a barista than just making coffee. Baristas must also have other skills such as customer service skills, the ability to handle money, basic food & hygiene skills and so on.
Learning to be a barista is an easy enough task despite what many people say. The perseption that being a barista makes you some sort of super-person who is amazingly talented and should be revered as a God like individual is very deceptive. Honestly, ANYONE can be a barista, you just need the right training, you’ll also need some spare time and above all you need to try! – How much effort you put in makes a big difference.
There are a number of steps you can take to become a barista, this is also something I have covered many times before in other blog posts and articles I have written (just do a search in the search box at the top)
How long it will take you to become a barista really depends on the amount of time and effort you put in. If you plan on training for an hour a week then it’s probably going to take a while. However if you make it an hour a day, you’ll cut that time down a lot!
